Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many aging parents have limited their social activities, including time with their grandchildren.
Those who are still married have the companionship of their spouse. But this companionship may be limited if they’re the caregiver.
Aging parents who are single may find it more challenging to stay social. Their friends may have moved away or died.
It’s harder to make friends when you’re older. For this reason, many aging parents are content just staying home.
Unfortunately, limited social interactions can increase the risk of accelerating cognitive decline.
Studies have shown that people who are socially isolated or lonely have a higher risk of developing cognitive problems.
For older adults, conditions like dementia and physical changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease can be a reality.
Maintaining social connections through activities with others can help protect against this decline.
If your aging parent spends more time by themselves, pay attention to signals about their state of mind and physical well-being.
During conversations, help them develop a daily routine that includes mental and physical exercises.
Here are some suggestions:
- Find a senior activity center near your parent and help them select activities to participate in that will help them meet new people.
- When calling them or visiting them, ask open-ended questions that will provide intellectual stimulation.
- Encourage family members to call or visit them more often.
- Explore online courses for your aging parent to attend.
As your parent ages, staying social may be an issue. Many seniors become set in their ways and find it easier to remain isolated.
Unfortunately, a lack of social interactions can increase the risk of cognitive decline. There has been more information and research available about cognitive decline, especially with more awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.
Encouraging your aging parent to be social will help decrease future healthcare costs and help you enjoy your parent longer.
