With my quest to jump start my health this year, I pay attention to how often I sit. My desk is tall so I stand most of the day while working. Most evenings I’m active with meetings, events or doing things around my home. But at least twice a week, I find myself in front of my TV catching-up on shows I’ve recorded on my DVR. For those extended periods of catching-up – which I admit can be over two hours – I find myself lounging on my recliner. While it’s comfortable and satisfies my need to veg, I knew I needed to do more while binge-watching (i.e., stop sitting and start exercising). But my motivation was lagging. I needed something to jump start it.

And there it was. While watching an episode of Shark Tank – yes, it was during my binge-watching – there was an easy solution to keep moving while watching TV. A mother-daughter team was pitching a fitness board which works your core. It’s the Simply Fit Board. I immediately jumped up from my recliner and ordered it online. A new fitness gadget was what I needed to jump start my motivation to do more while binge-watching.

Since its arrival, I alternate using the fitness board, lifting weights and doing other exercises (planks, push-ups, squats, etc.) while binge-watching. I knew buying this new fitness gadget would jump start my motivation. It’s like buying a new toy for a kid. Even though the fitness board is no longer new, I’ve gotten into the habit of exercising while binge-watching.

It takes a lot of motivation to do more while binge-watching, but it’s doable. Find something to motivate you into this habit. My motivation was buying a new fitness gadget. You don’t need to break the bank when buying something. Start small with a fitness gadget or even an app on your smartphone. Just make an effort to stop sitting while binge-watching. Get up from your sofa and walk in place, lift weights or do other exercises. Remember, staying healthy will lower your health care expenses in the future.
